How tight is to tight when I screw it into the 1st stage. Do I also put silicon grease on the threads?

Stripped is too tight. Be careful. No grease on threads.

Yea. not tight at all, barely wrench tight. Hold the wrench close to the head and be firm. The lack of leverage will prevent over torquing. In use, the internal pressure will end load the threads and help lock them in position.

No silicone on the threads but it's nice to have enough on the o-ring to make it shiny. Just wipe it with a greasy fingertip, (silicone grease) don't pack any on there. The slight film will help avoid any pulling and tearing as the joint closes in on the rubber.

If you have access to a little torque wrench, try about 8 Lbs. I typically do finger tight plus maybe a 1/12 to 1/8 turn with a wrench. If there is an o-ring a tiny amount of silicone grease (just enough to make it shine) is sufficient. And as above, no grease on the threads.

Good answers.

This question is asked frequently, and is actually good question. The natural inclination is to make sure the fittings are really tight so they wont leak and cannot "fall off", but this is a serious mistake and can easily cause damage to the regulator or hose fitting.

Really, for all of the hose fittings, just tight enough so they don't come undone with normal use is tight enough. Just tight enough so you cannot remove the fitting with your bare hands; so only slightly past hand-tight, just a "smidge", using a short-handled wrench, is good.

And yes, a "smidge" is an accepted mechanical term

Best wishes.

Use your pinky only on the wrench and up close to the fitting you are tightening.
