We will be staying at either FA or Occidental Grand in a week, and was wondering if the water at those resorts is safe (drink and brush teeth, etc).

Also, for the most part is the water safe at the restaurants in town? How will we know what restaurants are 'safe'?

Thanks!!!

PK

at the restaurants you can ask for bottled water. there is bottled water at the hotels. I put ice cubes in my drinks and had no problems.

In most of the restaurants I order water with ice in a glass. Not all but most. Have notgotton sick for several years. They try to sell you bottled water but it is not necessary most of the time. I also drink the ice. They have come a long way. It is a great place and I am moving there!!!

Living here, I can tell you that no one, not even the local population drinks the water from the tap. Unless the hotel you are staying at has notices posted in the rooms indicating SPECIFICALLY THAT IT'S OK TO DRINK TAP WATER...DON'T DO IT.
No need to worry about restaurants/bars and ice...since no one drinks tap water...no one uses it for consumptive items either ~ you will be served purified water/drinks/ice no matter where you are on the island.=-)

FA has their own desalination plant, so you can drink the water and brush your teeth at the tap in your room.

The water in the restaurants is definitely *not* safe to drink. Drink the bottled stuff.

We've been going to Mexico several times a year for many years. Never had a problem. Just use common sense. A lot of illness that gets blamed on bad water is actually dehydration, self inflicted alcohol related or eating something that has sat out like nachos in a basket. But if in doubt . . . Ever wonder why Coronas are served with a lime? Not for taste. The acid from the lime kills any lingering bacteria. If you are worried, squeeze a lime into whatever you are drinking.

It also occurrs to me that if you are in the habit of biting your nails, you maybe should try to refrain from doing so when you are in an environment where there is an abundance of microbes which are alien to your system. I have no hard evidence of that being a pathway for the Revenge, but it makes sense to me.

Ever drink a Corona (or Tecate) without lime? It's for the taste. I don't believe that the minor change in pH that squeezing a lime into a beer brings about has much, if any, effect on any bacteria that may be present. Citric acid is a very weak acid.

IANAB (brewmeister), but I believe that the brewing of beer is by necessity a sterile process except for the "tame" yeast that is used. Drink beer without fear.

PK,

We're staying at the Occidental Grand from the 15-22nd. If you stay there, and don't mind posting a report when you get back, please do so. Looking forward to hearing good things!

Have a nice trip!

We have been going there for years. We first went to Cancuun - got very ill from using tap water (I believe). Last few times in Coz, it's been great. I usually buy the large bottles of water, keep some spairs in my room for rinsing after brushing my teeth. I never use tap water for consumption... but you gotta wonder how you can avoid it in the shower? You swallow some there, and I haven't gotten sick?

PLG is a decent place and I still buy bottled water, even at the restaraunt.

I would say - stay away from the water if you can. Sol beer is pretty weak and is a great substitute!
