How old do you go?

I'm 64 and . . . . . . . what was the question?

Is that in dog years or people years?

My wife and I are young'uns, 51 (her) and 52 (me). Even though we got certified in late 2004, we didn't do any diving until this past year. One our last Cozumel trip we had a 72 year young diver onboard who brought his 68 year young newly certified buddy along. I figure if we log a minimum of 50 dives a year, that 1,000 dive milestone will be here before we know it!

My wife & I just heard Stan Waterman speaking last weekend about his latest dive trip and that guy is 86 years old. I have at least 30 years of diving left if I can just be like him.

I didn't get certified until I was 55.
I wonder what the distribution of experience is for the 'mature set'.
Hmm.. I feel a poll coming. I'll bet it's bimodal.

You kids make me nuts. I'm 68 and am working on my dive master certification. And I expect to complete it before very much longer. Before my father passed away, at age 86, he used to nag me about teaching karate when I was in my 50's. His comment, usually when I would come home with bruises and sore muscles was, "When are you going to stop playing with those kids?" My usual answer, and is still my answer today were he alive to hassle me about it, was, "When I can't do it any longer."

So far, I can still do it. And I expect to be able to do it for a good long time yet.

So, all you so called old folks, drive on. And screw the damn kids and their cult of youth.

At 58 all that's starting to get me are lower back pains due to a heavy weight belt when doing long dives in colder water with a 7mm semi-dry suit.
So I'm starting to prefer warm water dives with little neoprene and a lot less weight.

I am 57 tomorrow, certified in 2001 and just logged my 200th dive in the BVIs a month ago and can hardly wait to start another season of inland cold water diving here at home in Alberta this summer. I am consistently becoming a better diver and am taking a course from my buddy and instructor this summer on Tech Diving. I dive DIR. I have my next winter dive vacation booked and partly paid for already. I have a little dream that I can get down to dive the Baja this early winter.

Diving is life - the rest is just a surface interval!
