If I bought a regulator that had any dives on it I would be very pissed off. Testing is far different from having someone diving with it.

I have a different take on it. Some shops actually let you return gear after you've tried it if you don't like it. I'd like to encourage this policy. If they can't sell it, they will abandon the policy.

The gear was a singles wing. I filled it with air last night and it is leaking, so I am definately returning it. I will give the shop the benifit of the doubt and assume it was an honest mistake. I don't really have a problem with a piece of gear that has beeen used once or twice and returned. I would, however, like to be informed. That way when I notice myself, I don't ask the question, "how new is this?".
If the guy at the shop said something like, "the only one I have in stock is a return. you can have this one now, or if you want I'll order a new one."

My response would be, "the return is fine."

This dive shop is a good one, and I'm willing to bet he just grabbed a demo by accident.

The reason I posted the original question is because of exactly what Walter is talking about. I want to be able to return gear, so I have to accept that shops need to sell returned gear, on the other hand, I don't feel comfortable if I put an inflator in my mouth and it tastes like salt.

I also feel that as a consumer, I should be offered a small discount (maybe 5% - take care of uncle sam for me at least) for goods that have been in the ocean. I looked at the tag and it said the wing was manufactured in 2007, so that salt has been on it since last summer in all likelyhood. On the other hand, all of my inflators taste a little salty, so if the thing held air I would just ignore it.

Salty reg would be a different story.
