I know the answer varies by individual, but I'm just looking to get a ballpark of how much weight most people of my stature use. It's a question I've always wanted to ask.

If you are a male who weighs between 165 and 175, fairly slim, and dive with a 7mm wetsuit and all the accessories (hood, booties, gloves, etc.) and an AL80 tank, how many pounds of weight do you use when diving in salt water?

I weigh about 170 and wear 24 lbs right now.

Roughly 170lbs (12 stone) in weight.

Membrane drysuit, weezle undersuit, 5mm hood, 5mm gloves, lots of pairs of socks.

Steel cylinder, either 12.2l or 15l and i use 11kg (24lbs). I could possibly shave a few more pounds off if i really wanted to (but i dont).

Edit:- Diving abroad with 5.5mm suit and 12l steel cylinder from my log book i was using 5kg (11lbs) although i did one dive with 2kg (4.5lb) and was fine.

I'm about 180 and i dive with 24lbs in a 7mm...but my usual buddy is 10lbs less than me and uses the same weight, so he's roughly the same as you...

Height 6 ft and I tip the scales at 148 and wear 20 pounds. I could probably shave that down to 18 or so. I have been on dives and given 4 pounds to my buddy and was able to do the dive, but it was interesting and too touchy for me to want to do on a regular basis. 20 pounds works well for me.

I'm currently 234 (losing?!?!). I'm 6'3" tall and use a 3mm full suit. I usually use about 14lbs total weight, including my stationary trim weights. I'm trying to get down to 10 lbs. It will just take time.

I'm 6'2" and 240lbs. With a 7mm one piece full suit I'm using 28lbs of weight. I'm still renting gear so it's hard to fine tune, but I think I can drop another 2lbs on my next dive.

5'11" 175lb. 4mm drysuit cold water under garments, lots in winter. 34lb summer 38lb in winter.

People, let's focus !!!! I appreciate your input on how much weight you use, but the question was specifically directed towards those who weigh between 165-175, use a 7mm wetsuit and accessories, and dive with an AL80. If we post responses for all different combinations then the results will be pretty meaningless. Thank you for your support.

Party on, Garth.

It's kind of a silly question, since the answers only apply if the people who respond are built exactly like you, breathe exactly like you, and dive with the same equipment.

That said, I can't help but answer anyway. 8-)

I'm 6', 225 lbs, and use 15 pounds with a steel 95 and a drysuit. I use about 4 pounds with a 5 mil wetsuit.

The numbers you seek won't necessarily be within a meaningful range anyway because each persons rig may be different. Experience (ie ones ability to relax) will play a major role. Don't forget different neoprenes compresses differently at depth. Rubatex is much less compressible than the cheaper stuff.

Do this the correct way and figure how positive you are without the rig with all your exposure protection, fins and mask. Write the number down in your log book showing how much weight it takes to just sink you when you exhale completely. Then find out how negative or positive the rig is without you in it. Then do the math using the 6 lb swing towards positive for the AL80. You may have to add a pound or two at most.
