I'll be taking my first boat dives in November (Puerta Vallarta and Cabo San Lucas). What is a typical tip or range of tipping for the divemaster? I want to be sure and tip appropriately for good service.

on a two tank dive I usually tip $10 to $20 bucks if they were good, less if the service was bad.

You might want to call on that issue. Some places figure in tips for their DM or Instructor. Keep in mind I say some, that does not mean many, most, or all. Just worth checking into before-hand.

Have a great trip.

A minimum of $5 us per tank, so 10 bucks for a two tank trip is pretty standard. +/- for great or poor service. I have NEVER dove with a DM who had tips included but YMMV.

Wow! thanks for all the prompt responses.

Hey! how come you guys aren't all working on this Friday afternoon?

The $5-10 per tank rule, with more or less depending on the quality of service sounds like a good starting point. Those U.S. dollars convert in to a whole lot of pesos.

gracias, ya'll.

Yeah, but you need 90-140 of them to buy a meal.

As Red pointed out, in resort areas live Puerto Vallarta, things are expensive. I have been on boats where people have tipped 20 pesos for a 2 tank dive. More of an insult than if they would not have left a tip at all.

Cozumel too, Dennis. I tip the same amount in US dollars regardless. Many of the DMs support their families on tips and any wages they receive from the dive operator.
