What material is your line made of? When I started diving the instructor for my wreck class recomemded sissal since it would decay if left on the wreck.

I use standard nylon line. I think of sisal as being used in rug manufacturing.....the idea is NOT to leave any line behind --- :-)

Nylon is standard for penetration line. The sisal is typically used for a Jersey Up-line, an emergency ascent line that you will leave attached to the wreck when you surface.

Wow,,,so 'sisal' is used on those 300' 2-handed spools...I was curious to the material....interesting. :-)

Is a wreck reel really needed? I have a finger spool that would work.

I used to use a spool with 160ft of line on it for penetrating. Never had any problems deploying it or reeling it back up (which is, as was stated before, quite slow but not hard with a bit of practice). The nice thing about finger spools is that if, say, your buddy wraps their find aorund the line and yanks the spool out of your hand it'll just spin about in front of you. Also, they'll never jam.
Proper reels are a lot easier and quicker to deploy and retreive though, so long as you have a proper one.
At current I dive with a 400ft primary and a 160ft safety spool.

I often just get neutral and use the winding of the reel for propulsion

So what happens when you cut your line on sharp metal because your using it to pull yourself out? It should be a visual reference, if you are kicking/moving on your own and slowly reel in you minimize this possibility. Plus if it does break it will lie on the ground and you can still follow it out. If your pulling on it and it snaps you can lose it.

Can anyone post photos of thier reels? I am confused about the configuration. What is the "approved" DIR configuration?

How many wreck divers are used Halcyon pathfinder guidelines devices 400/800/1200 for wreck penetration?
What you choose?
