These things all make a difference I have set a limit of 175' to 200' of penetration on myself and I depth limit of 165' I also do wrecks in the great lakes where there is only moderate current and the worst. Therefore I carry a 270' main reel and 100' spool, this allows my 200' of penetration allowing for tie offs along the way and a fudge factor. This also allows me to shoot a bag from the wreck even if currents carry it a bit. All of my deco stops start above 70' so I can use the 100' spool if I need to shoot a bag while on deco. So really you need to define and plan your dives then decide on your reels.
Well all those others really have a lot of line, but remember, if you are only PADI wreck specialty certified, of cavern certified, you can only penitrate a total of 130ft and that is both vertical & horizontal- so if you enter a wreck at 70ft down, you can only penitrate 60ft in according the the "rules"Jorbar1551:How much line do you carry when doing a penetration dive?
I think a reel is a useful tool. If nothing else it will get you back to your exit faster than a spool. I often just get neutral and use the winding of the reel for propulsion. With the amount of money you end up spending for classes and the rest of the gear to do it safely it seems silly to worry about the cost of a reel.Is a wreck reel really needed? I have a finger spool that would work.
