In an exercise worth trying, you can take a tank at 200 psi or so and hook a regulator to it and breathe it dry in the shallow end of a pool. No, it won't hurt anything, it won't get water in the tank or in the hoses or any of those other "old wives tales" horror stories about letting a tank get to zero (just get the tank out of the water and don't take it to the deep end after it's empty, where all those horrible things could happen). As you feel it get harder to breathe, start counting breaths... take your time and inhale slowly. You'll most likely be surprised at how many breaths you get after you first start noticing some resistance.
BUT
If you get 12 breaths from the time you start feeling resistance at the surface, you'll get *3* at 100'... the same ratio applies as to gas consumption.
Back in the day of K valves and no pressure gauge, starting up at the first sign of resistance made for a comfortable ascent. 'Course we didn't know 'bout safety stops in those days either. :)
