How much easier is TTL?

(I know the focus (and a lot of other things) would be waaaaay better on the slr, as well as guessing how much strobe power, since my distance to subject would be more fixed based on what lense I was using - the S1 has a 10x zoom, so I'm usually all over the place in terms of subject distance.) But if I'm still going to have to guess at exposure . . . I'd rather play with video.

You need to keep in mind that zoom and telephoto are different things. As Alcina mentioned, zoom in itself can be useful as far as fine tuning your framing and short increases or decreases in moving in and out, so zooming isn't necessarily a bad thing, in fact it's good. But a zoom to a telephoto range focal length can affect greatly the quality of light. I use my 12-24mm zoom all the time, as for me, wide angle is the best lens for what I shoot, but the zoom gives me some flexibility to go to a lesser wide angle view should the situation require it.
