in Thailand, where I dive, the average cost of a boat dive is 50.00 US. I guess this is an expensive sport. One advantage of getting the Divemaster is that you can dive free? Well, I should not say free. But IK can imagine the thousands many of you must have spent just for dives.

$50 bucks for the boat. $10 for the DM. $10-$20 for gas. (Mix)

Shore dive....$2 bucks for air and $3 to park.

which is Northern Illinois, it is $20 to get into the local lake or quarry. A Charter on Lake Michigan for a 2-tank dive is anywhere from $60-90. $60 being the low side and that is if you're with a group and get the discount. Tanks & weights are not included. The only thing most of them provide is water, pop and snacks like pretzels.

From my house, it is 60 miles average to most of the dive spots so factor gas and tolls into the cost.

PS- As a Divemaster, entry to the lake/quarry is free only if I am assisting with a class.

4 bucks to fill up my 130. If I dive off the local beach, 5 minutes away, I have a parking permit, other beaches about a buck an hour.

Local charters are $60 for a 2-tanker, $75 for a 3-tanker. Local shore dives are mostly free and easily accessible, except for the state parks that cost $5 for entry and the one site that charges $1 per hour for parking. I don't pay for my air fills, and my Honda Element gets great mileage ... several dive sites are within less than a gallon of gasoline, round trip. One of my favorites is only 2.5 miles from my house.

I just dove in Fort Lauderdale, Fl. it cost me $45.00 for the boat, 2 tanks @ $10.00 each and $5.00 for the DM. I live in NY my dives in the Atlantic off a boat $65 - 75.00 + air + $5.00-$10.00 for DM.
There are no bargins in diving!

Our shop charges 60 bucks for a 2 tank dive. We're in Oregon. In hawaii I routinely pay 100 bucks for a two tank dive.

As a dive leader we get paid 5 bucks per diver plus tips. Ain't getting rich doing that right??? :)

In Malaysia, where I did most of my diving, the dives I did range from RM 30 to RM 90. Most of the Time, the more dives I did, the cheaper it will be cos, dive centre will give discount when one did more than certain amount of dives. :11ztongue . All these dives usually come with a DM unless we informed in advance that we want to dive without one :11ztongue

$50 for a 2 tanker, $75 for a 3...... we did 5 days of 2 tankers in Key Largo for $180 each plus tips for the crew.

Most of my diving is in fresh water lakes easily gotten to by car or truck and that's just the gas cost for what you drive. I have my own compressor but if you figure the maint. cost and the annual vehicle costs plus factor in a few bucks for the equipment you have it probably totals around 20$-50$ per dive on average.
But the obvious cost seems to be "free". Air costs nothing, but puttin it in the tank is another story. If I mix some trimix or heliox blend then the price goes up accordingly. But I have a welding shop and use some of these gasses when I weld. (Argon- works for suit inflation and for heli-arc welding on aluminum and steel, Helium- works for mixing with oxygen to make trimix and also for heli-arc welding of stainless and aluminum, oxygen- works for my cutting torch and also for the nitrox I blend. I know, the stuff is more expensive than plain ol' welding gasses but the customer is paying the bill for the welding repairs and the price is offset by me not having to have double cylinders around (One for welding-One for breathing) which would cost twice as much in rental and lease fees.
See, diving isn't that expensive, you just have find a way to defer the costs over into a business right-off!
