I understand that rec-diving is not the field where people make a lot of money but I wanted to know (for my own curiosity,) approx how much does a Dive Master make?

Free air fills, a discount on gear, I get the occassional meal after helping with students all day haha.

Generally DM'S make um.....nada. Some do get tips, some do get to dive for free. Some do live but do not make a living. Many do have a real job. DM'S do get the hot chicks now and then which is by far a great bonus!

Seriously. DM's do not make money. If one does choose to work as a Fulltime DM..they may get room and board and some cash, depending on whom they are working for. They may even get great tips and that may be enough for them...

So tip your DM he/she is not on salary and they do need the cash to eat once in a while...

I worked as a DM for a few years. My total pay was -$55. I had to pay for my own spot on a boat once. :(
Every other time was a "free" boat ride in which I would sometimes get in one dive.

Note, there is a Diff btw DM and instructor. Can anyone comment on a common payment amount for a 2-tank dive for an instructor?

From what I gather, the shop pulls in a total of about $80 per person for each 2-tank dive. If the boat min is 4 people and max is 8, that means $320-640. Based on expenses and such, I figure they don't dole out more than about 1/6 of income for the primary staff... so that's about $50-100 for the instructor, plus tips.

in sydney, DM's get free airfills and free boat dive (AOW classes only) and maybe a deal on gear

otherwise nothing for the fuel and parking (and in sydney, some places cost $16 in parking) and the insurance they are required to have

hence why hubbys DM's always get a 6 pack of crown or wild turkey or for the non drinkers a $40 fuel voucher (and this comes out of our pockets, not the dive shops)

cheers
