I hear different reports on the number of units that are out there. Is there any official numbers? not just rumours.

No official Numbers as APD keep them very secret (cos they need to pay royalties to certain folks for every unit they sell)
But at least 3000 have been sold and 5000 is probably nearer the mark
either figure means there are more Inspirations out there than all the other CCR's added together.
Only RB unit with more sales would possibly be the Dolphin/ray
Most other CCRs sales are around the low 100's units mark
