i had a barotrauma a while back. there was no permanent damage done, but it was pretty painful. how long should you wait b4 u can freedive again safeley w/o the ear being weak?

As a diver who has ruptured his eardrum twice in the last two years, my best advice is to consult an ENT and get his (or her) advice. In both cases with me, I was out of the water for a month and then right back to diving. I'm sure different people will take differing amounts of time to heal.

You might also want to go to;

and watch the streaming video.

It will do a lot to help you understand your ears and diving, not to mention several ways to equalize.

Yes, it is still a good idea to see a diving ENT and get checked out.

i saw a regular ent a month ago and he said wait 3 months...that sucks b/c now i just chill on the surface and watch my friends slay grouper, its like torture.

I remember your post from a couple of months back. There was some question as to the exact injury you suffered. Was the problem confined to your eardrum or were some middle ear structures damaged? Did you have a perforation?

You mention free diving now, not scuba. Was that how you hurt yourself in the first place? I think free diving is much harder on one's ears, with all the repeated pressure changes.

The type of injury may give you some wiggle room. If your doc said three months, better stick with that recommendation. Getting fully healed will let you pursue the sport. into the future. Reinjuring yourself might be the end of it.
