Hi all,

How good is the Wifi at Scuba Club Cozumel? I can buy 80min of talk time for $30 from AT&T, but it would not be needed if I could facetime (voice or video) with my family over Wifi.

And for you techies out there.. I'm not going to buy a local pre-paid SIM. Too much hassle for a week in Cozumel.

Thanks

It would be interesting for someone to do a speedtest of SCC internet. As I recall when I first started going there in 2005, they had a dsl line that was not very fast.

It seems to have improved as of last summer, however, the speed was variable during the day: fast when everyone was out diving and slow when everyone came back. I was there while SCC was holding the yearly photo seminar so there were a lot of uploads going on so it definitely was something you would notice in regards to speed. It was much better when the seminar was over when there were very few guests.

Now they have a streaming video cam which will tak For the most part, I did most of my posting very early in the morning and had little issue with speed.e at least a bit of bandwidth assuming they share the same internet connection as guests do.

We used Facetime voice mostly, put our iPhones in Airplane Mode and simply turned on WiFi. It worked fine, better when there were few guests. For the most part, I did most of my email and posting very early in the morning and had little issue with speed. Netflix was a whole other issue as was Google (they thought I was a scammer from MX).

In other words, actual mileage/bandwidth will vary depending on how crowded it is!

SCC's wifi is very good and you can connect inside most rooms. Signal strength is highest in the bar area if you have trouble elsewhere.

Be aware that internet speeds drop in the late afternoon and early evening as islanders get home and log on.

ditto... sitting out by restaurant I get the best signal, but last trip (May 2014) we got good service in our room. PLUS.... its free.
