The manual shows a picture of thumbs pushing the o-ring together to create a spot with enough slack to pick it out. But that just isn't working for me. Is there a safe way to pick the ring out?

Did you play a guitar??????
Picks, picks

Very carefully, try the corner of a credit card. If you nick it, replace it.

I'm with you! Typical problem with Canon o-ring. After a while, they get harder and harder to remove.

And that was one of the reason why my last A70+WPDC-700 went bust, because I could not properly apply silica gel to it.

I have a WP-DC50. I'm assuming the o-ring is similar. Here's how I do it: With the case open and the back with o-ring up, press down with the pad of your right index finger on the upper right corner and slide across the top to the left corner while applying continuous pressure on the o-ring. You should see some slack develop on the left side which can be rolled out of the channel quite easily. The key is to slide ;your finger on a long side while pressing down. Watch your fingernails!
