How long will a BC last with proper care and maintenance ?

and generally how can a diver hurt and KILL a BC ??

thanks

I have one that is from the mid 80's (bought it used so I don't know exactly how old it is)and it's still in good working order. It does have some battle scars but it is still fine to dive with. Keep them rinsed off, out of the sun light as much as possible and don't abuse them and there is no telling how long they will last. I have a newer one, mainly because I wanted it, not because I needed it. Most likely the worst thing you could do to one is to get some sort of solvent (gas, oil or the like) on it and melt the plastics in it. I seriously doubt the average rec diver can actually wear a quality BC out.....I am trying however, hehehe.

A bath in Sulfuric Acid would probably do nicely...

Repeatedly stabbing it or shooting a couple of times might work. But to tell you the truth I suspect they are kind of like zombies and can be resurrected rather easily...

Not sure if you could bludgeon one to death.

Yup. I think an acid bath is your best bet!

Killing a BC

Just give it to a DIR diver and they will put it to sleep for you.

other than that they will last forever.

the one thing that will deteriate rapidly it is the sun, like the ones used on a dive boat in the tropics

Why would you want to? I heard they were really nice people. HaHa, sorry could'nt resist:)

lal7176 once bubbled...

Do i sense some hostility there? :D

no not at all. I just know that DIR divers do not like BCD's

Pool chlorine will wear out dive gear pretty quick. Lots of instructors have a special set of cheap stuff for the pool. A few BC's use an elastic clasp over the cummerbund. On these models when the velcro wears out on the cummerbund the BC is shot, or needs an expensive repair. Also, velcro integrated weight pockets tend to go bad fast, but the BC remains usable with a weight belt.

One of the nicknames of my oldest kid is "BC", he's not going to like the tone of this thread...
:out:

seriously though...
Chlorine, ozone, volatiles (like petroleum) & UV can all gang up & trash out the vinyl, plastic, rubber & nylon on a BCD (wings too)
Bladders & hoses are usually first to go.
