Well, I've got something over 250 now, and only two or three bad ones, so the rest were good. Since they have very little in common other than getting wet and not getting scared or embarrassed, I guess that's all that's required :)

The really good dives are the ones where I come up grinning and I'm still grinning hours later.

That's it!

More specifically...the ones that you see something you've never seen before, (i.e. a very cool wreck or sealife) Reached a new goal (i.e. depth, bottom time, etc.) or simply (early in the season) not cramping!:D

In almost 1300 dives I can only remember one bad dive, and then only because I was bored. The ones I considered the best are when I say,"Wow!" as soon as I surface. Usually it's when I find a rare animal or witness unusual behavior from a common one.

Gee, I've had a lot of dives like that, that I still considered good because:

A good dive? Nobody got hurt, everybody had fun.

A great dive? That Cousteau-esque "bird" feeling of downright perfect bouyancy control over the course of the dive. The one where your hand is on your chest inflator valve a split-second before it needed to be and you're venting the same way. The dives when you say on the surface, "I'd really like to see X today", and you drop down to find it waiting for you in that Babe Ruth calling-your-shot sort of way. (Of course, this doesn't count for wreck divers...if it isn't still there, it's a really bad day...LOL)

Cheers,
Austin

I was just thinking the other day that on every dive I've ever done, I think the first thing out of my mouth (after my reg) was "Great dive!"

Well, there was one dive, at night, huge surge, 2' viz, and we called it after 10 miunutes. While it was the worst dive I've ever had, it still was not really a BAD dive, and a pretty good learning experience.

I seem to learn something on almost every other dive.... I don't think I'll ever not learn something.... I am too stupid to know everything.
