I first took that same specialty many, many, years ago. I was pretty good at it -- a natural says my wife. She said I didn't need to finish all the required dives; I could get my c-card right away and the rest of the dives would be fun dives. Fast forward to today. Recently, I asked my wife if we could do a fun dive. She said "Not today. Let's postpone it until next week." I said, well uhhh...OK, but I won't have anything to write in my log book. She said "Why don't you write that we talked for a while and had a great time". I said, OK sure, but the last 22 entries say the same thing and I thought we could try something different this time. She said, "You have a one-track mind. That's all you bring up and besides we did a fun dive just two weeks ago." I said, nooooo, I did a SCUBA fun dive at the quarry and you weren't there. Don't you remember? She said, "If I wasn't there how can I remember"? I said, uhhh, yeah, ummm....... (at this point she's already walked out of the room). I'm feeling totally dejected and even the cat is giving me a pitiful look. So, she walks in with a laundry basket and asks "Why are you just sitting there doing nothing. There's a lot of things to do and you're just sitting there".
I'm pretty sure I'd be looking for a new buddy.

I love my wife and we've been married now 35 years. The responses I used for my wife, although cast in a dive frame, are actually quite accurate. The only exageration was the length of the SI (22 entries). She does support my diving, although sometimes she complains, and she worries too much about my solo diving.

My wife worries about my solo-diving too. Wait, we are still talking about SCUBA aren't we? :D

Yes. I forgot context. My quote above and in my last response has to do with SCUBA. Thanks for the alert.

Don't get me wrong. I do see the value in logging my dives. I use it as some do for reference .. how much weight with what tank and configuration for what dive. My memory isn't what it used to be. I use it to help keep track of my photos and to refresh my memory about dive sites, entries, conditions, critter sightings etc. I do not log my dives to impress anyone.. my buddies or myself.

I have been asked to see my dive log. Some places in OZ require it be sighted.

I think we are talking about two things here. Logging dives and keeping dive counts for sensible reasons and/or using the numbers to inflate egos or for bragging purposes. I never have been inclined to stroke egos or be impressed by braggarts.

If I choose to dive with you the most important thing to me is that we are both competent to successfully complete the dive and have fun together in the process! In the water the only way to impress me is with your skill sets I hope the reverse is also true.

On reading Scubaboard posts the only way to impress me is to write sensible intelligent posts while demonstrating some basic social conventions of politeness and consideration for how others will be impacted by your posts. I can respect someone with a different opinion but I do not respect rude, inconsiderate blowhards:doh:. IMHO if a person contaminates a post with rubbish the valuable comments are lost in the process.

 they do ask if I am DIN or Yoke :giggle: but that is a horse of a different colour :)
 maybe they are actually asking if I am DIM or a Yokel :fear:

Oh.. that reminds me.. I need to check my dive log for water temps at which time of year some friends are thinking of coming to dive with us next year :) yet another use for dive logs :)

I am often more impressed when someone calls a dive rather than push on. :D

Bwah!!! Hell or high water!!! Seriously, I've only had to call a dive twice. First one, we all got spooked with the # of sharks in the water. I think we worked ourselves up mentally..especially with all of the dorsals thrashing. We picked a new spot.

Second dive, waves crashing where they shouldn't have been with huge rollers, weird winds that day. We were so beat up the first dive.

Yes I do agree, you have to know when to fold em some times.

I think one of the most important things a diver needs to learn is how to judge their skill set and call a dive when appropriate. Better to be overly caustious and miss a dive you could have done than get into a situation you are not ready to cope with. One may mean embarrassment the other injury or death. I know which one I'd rather ....
