Hi fellow underwater photo taker,

I came back from a dive trip last week, and while cleaning my camera housing I found a white ring of substance around the black rubber seal of a control button (see attached picture)

I don't know whether it is salt crystal or not but I'm concerned.
I soaked the housing in warm water overnight (24 hours) but the white ring still remained. Any advise on how to remove it?
Should I be concerned about it? Please advise.

Thanks in advance.

I'm a bit out of my element on this, but it would appear that the only way to remove this white deposit is going to be by removing the seal, and relubing it. I have no idea if that is a good idea with your camera housing or not.

IMO contact the manufacture, send them the photo you attached, and see what they have to say. If you are comfortable removing the seal on your own, then do so, but I'd still recommend contacting the manufacture first to see what they have to say.

If the manual does not address removing these seals, then it's likely not something that you want to tackle without some help from someone who knows a lot more about these things than you or I. :D

Ummm, before you get too excited it might be a bit of silicone grease. I see this on a couple of my housings - especially when they are new.

Scale or salt build up has texture; excess silicone looks smooth.

Work the buttons for a few minutes in a bucket of warm water. See what happens to it and report back...

Hi,

Thanks for the advise, the white substance looks smooth so as you said, it may not be salt...

I think what I'll do is dive with empty casing when I next dive and see how the casing holds...

Thanks.
