I'm always curious to hear how people got into their hobbies or passions, however you wish to put it. So for newbies and not-so-newbies, how did you get into scuba diving?

Ever since I was a kid I was fascinated with water. I remember taking a 2-liter of soda, wrapping it in aluminum foil, and strapping it to my back for Halloween. When I was a kid, my buddy's dad was a diver. I remember looking at his gear and thinking he was the coolest person in the world.

I really enjoy learning new things, and there's TONS of stuff to learn about diving. I dig the peace and serenity I find when u/w.

Always loved the water, wanted to be a scuba diver but it was just too expensive.
Came to a point in my life it was no longer too expensive and here I am, travelling around the world diving and loving it!

It was either scuba diving or marriage counciling...I think we choose the right one, we're still married...:)

I'm more curious as to why a man would use a screen name like "mudchick."

Mostly because I'm not male. Sexism abounds! Was there anything I said that specificially indicated the effects of testosterone poisoning? Am I relegated to the "women's only" forum because I am possesed with intelligence, jois de vive, an adventuresome spirit and different naughty bits? ;)

i think male may be the default if someone isn't paying attention

why i took up scuba?

well... i grew up in Cuba, basically swimming around the reef. eventually i
got a mask (tougher than it sounds) and WOW... WOW... so... i basically
grew up with the fish.

cut to 25 years later. went to the Cayman Islands, got back into snorkeling.
it was like a jolt of familiarity. so i figured, i'll take a resourt course, go diving.

did. loved it. haven't looked back
