We'll be diving in Cozumel this April and bringing my GF's 14 year old son who is certified. I recall some of the best reefs being at depths of around 90 ft. Are there any Ops who don't strictly follow the age/depth limit rules?

I'd hate to have to leave him on the boat.

Here's a link where this was discussed...

What are age/depth restrictions..

I just read the first few posts of deepsea21's link and had to "walk away", as the posts were so full in misinformation it was bizarre.

Your 14 year old son, while diving with you, has a depth limitation of 130 feet. If you are unavailable, a dive master may accompany him with the same restriction.

If your son were to dive with a bunch of strangers, he would be limited to 60 feet.

PADI used to have this information clearly spelled out on their website, but decided to dumb it down to the point that it is useless.

I researched this topic thoroughly when my boys were certified at 12 and 14.

I have stated PADI's "rules". What "rules" a particular op anywhere may establish is up to them. Assuming your son is reasonably proficient, email the ops you're considering to see what their particular limitations and requirements are. I eliminated several either because of their rules, or ignorance of PADI's rules.

Idocsteve, I just re-read your post, and saw that it was your GF's son. My response above would remain the same or change dependent upon the nature and tenure of your relationship with both.

Leave him on the boat??? That would be cruel. The worst case for me would cause me to hire a private dive master for him at about $50.00 USD for each trip.

This might be an equally good question:

Are there any Cozumel dive ops who DO strictly follow the various training agencies' age/depth limit recommendations?

Most don't because they don't know what they really are. They've made an arbitrary decision based on their own peculiar criteria, which is their absolute right.

Add to the mix that 100' deep in Cozumel is quite a different environment from 100' deep in someplace like Puget Sound.

Those that are used to diving in warmer waters are advised to add 10' to their depth to accommodate the thrilling physiology of diving in water in the mid 40's.

Edit to add: As for me, too old for that sheet.

All you want to see off of Coz is no deeper than 80 ft!
