Whats up with that? There I was in the pool doing the 18 skills for DM cert. all was great until I started hovering. Don't get me wrong, I totally did it, it just was done upside down. My instructor suggested ankle weights. (no clue) My question is, why is this happening to me, when I'm in the ocean I can hover just fine, and now I'm a little anxious seeing that I will have to preform this skill in front of a class in week.

BTW......There's one other in my Dm class, and he didn't turn upside down. I'm convinced the pool is bias... ;)

Is this happening to any other chickies?

I can reasonably hover in pretty much any position, lying face down, face up, on my head, feet first, starting to get there pretty well with my mask off (a la GUE DIR-F skills) too - so i guess i dont have the spinning problem you mention. However my experience is limited and you must have a load more dives as a DM candidate than i do.

FWIW, when i did that for my OW class i kind of took the lotus position grabbing my fins like a little genie and stayed pretty well within the depth i was hoping for, i had some twisting at the time that made my head tilt forward - is that what you mean? I was in a nasty cheap rental BC at the time, plus having no experience. I am now a little better trimmed and am wondering if when you try to do this skill, that something is throwing you off the position that you are after during the hover? Ankle weights have their own problems and may not suit your style of diving.

Are you literally upside down, or just tilting over? I mean head to the floor, feet above you head, but still your face is pointing to see the side of the pool - as if you were freediving down for something??

The ability to hover horizontal is dependent upon having your center of gravity over your center of bouyancy. I'm just guessing here but since you can hover horizontally in the ocean but are having trouble in the pool I'm thinking that you may need to move some weight towards your hips. This can be accomplished by moving your tank, moving your weight belt or repositioning weights on an intergrated system.

I'm also guessing that you mean you are doing a headstand instead of being supine.

For the DM demo hover, I simply twist my weight belt around so that the weights are in the front of my body rather than in the back. This gives me a perfect vertical sit or kneel hover. When the skill is done I move the weights back to the back where I like them and can get the perfect horizontal hover--which is what diving is about!

Bring the jet fins to the pool you will have no problem in the "geanie" position. Sometimes an ankle weight around the tank helps depending what you are doing. Just move weight around as sugessted above to acheive the proper c. of grav. over c. of bal.

I've noticed that many women (some men but mostly women) have floaty feet! Dunno why but their feet seem to float more than mens. As others have suggested, ankle weights may help and adjusting your weights on the belt so that they are forward on the hips may do. I've also had some luck getting folks to kneel rather than sit on the bottom or to lie forward.

On the plus side, new students are generally entertained when you hover upside down! :crafty:

May have shifted air to the bottom causing your butt to move up...

Dont mean to insinuate anything about any women, but generally they have, shall we say, a little more meat on their thighs and buns than guys - fat being less dense than muscle, up pop your legs. Guys hold their fat mainly around their gut - mmmm nice, not really outside the center of balance. This is only how i see it, if anyone can put real data/theory into this then go ahead - but it makes sense to me. ;)
