Hey Ya'll, (yes.. I'm from Texas and say Ya'll..just for laughs!:rofl3: )

I'm new to this board... I just signed up and I'm looking for housing for my 35mm Canon SLR Elan. Yes, I know, everyone is going digital.. and I do have a point and shoot digital for fun... but I'm a "land photographer" and I'm old school... still have a darkroom and I like it that way! :blinking:

So in the mean time, AND WHEN I can afford a nice DIGITAL SLR.. I would like to find a housing for my 35mm.

Any suggestions? Anyone have one that they are selling?

Thanks everyone!!!

Micha

Hi, Micha,

I am going to be lazy and let you do the looking...try Ikelite:

http://www.ikelite.com/

Sometimes there are things in the attic or basement that they sell. Also, you can see if Backscatter ( http://www.backscatter.com/ ) has anything around...there are some other suppliers that "the google" (to quote another Tejano) could lead you to on "the internets".

I am reluctant to suggest eBay when it comes to housings because you cannot know for certain the flood/abuse record of such beasts.

Hope this helps....

Thank you so much for the info!! I hope that wasn't too much trouble!! ;)
Oh..and I love some of the pictures on your site... very cool! Spotted rays are my favorite!

I'll go and check out the sites now!!

Hi, Micha,

I hope you have some luck, but it will require luck. Housings for film cameras are well on their way to extinction.

Thanks for your kind words about my photos. I have posted a few more ray photos tonight. I have been away from the Board for many years, but I dived lots and lots during that time. I also took many photos and am posting a few every so often.

Again, good luck,

Micha,

I am a former owner of Elan IIe as well. I happened to notice Ikelite housings for the Elan series on Ebay from time to time.... quite cheap as well. So you may want to check there from time to time. Good luck!

Hi, Micha,

I have been pondering your "dilemna" and I would make a suggestion: save your sheckels until you have enough to get a digital camera and housing. Why? Because the housing for your Elan is probably going to cost you several hundred dollars and you will be building an obsolete system.

Basically, the only added expense is that of the digital camera. All the rest of the gear will be the same...you might get a break on the housing, but if you get it off eBay, you should probably have it checked by a pro...and it might need rebuilding...you will end up spending as much money and have a system that you will want to replace in a year or so....

Well, that's one perspective....

It will be difficult to find a housing for the Elan. Aside from Ikelite, the only other housing I remember was made by Kenko/Delphinus. That may have been for the A2E.

Don't be afraid of eBay. Just make sure that the product is serviceable. I would stick with brands like Aquatica or Subal. Take it to a place like Backscatter or Underwater PhotoTech. Housings need regular service anyway. Expect to spend $100 to $150 to have all the o-rings replaced and the housing tested.

During the film days, Nikon ruled the roost. Nikonos-language flash TTL became the defacto language. It's the main reason you don't see too many Canon film cameras. There were some exceptions for professional-level F-series Canons.

You can always try Adorama, Tri State, Abes. I'd even look in shutterbug to see if the used stores have something.

Hi, Eagle,

As a real fan of eBay--it really is my version of the Mall--I have difficulty disagreeing with you. However, when it comes to housings, I suggest being cautious. If the housing has suffered flooding and needs to be completely rebuilt, it can be a costly operation.

Beyond that, I fear that getting into uw film camera stuff is just putting off the inevitible purchase of a digital camera.

Now, this is just opinion and clearly there can be other opinions...

No problem, joewr.

I don't dive anything until it gets serviced. Underwater PhotoTech replaces all the o-rings and makes sure the housing/camera is ready. That includes pressure tests.
