Has anyone ever heard of or tried to "timeshare" a housing? I own the D70, but only would use the housing 5 - 10 times per year.

I would be a little nervous putting my camera in a housing that I didn't know the day to day history of. Kind of the same reason that I prefer to own my own regs. At least a flooded housing will only kill the camera instead of killing you.

I've never heard anybody mention the idea, but you might be able to make arrangements with a fellow local scuba club member.

wow, sounds interesting.

When I first bought my camera, I shared with another guy for a while. We shared lenses and ports, etc. Then he bought his own.

Do you have a link to who is doing this?

Catherine...I haven't heard of anyone doing it. I wanted to do it to defray the cost of ownership of something I will seldom use.

dbh... I hear you, but I don't want to spend $3K plus for a housing when I take 1 tropical trip every couple of years and the local marine life is spotty.

You may want to look at rentring the entire package at your destination. Them you do not have to worry about insurance, airports, and upgrades.

I am doing this with ABQDiver. We went in on a housing together. As we both live in LandLocked areas (CO/NM), know one another, and both own D200's we split the cost of a housing. We purchased it new. I do one or two trips a year as does he. I have the housing fully insured, and I believe he does as well. As there is not a lot of maintenance that goes into these things, I just make sure the oring is good, and we have a spares for both the dome ports, and housing. I trust him to take care of the housing and versa visa.

The up side is that we saved a lot of $$$. The downside is that we have to share, and our dates may conflict.

One must trust the individual you are planning on doing this with. Another factor is that if you don't live in the same city, it can become a bit of a shipping issue. He's got the housing for a trip in June, and I will likely want it very shortly after he returns, so we shall see how that works out.

This arrangement would not work well for someone who lives someplace were they are diving a lot. For us, I use my Camera UW on a very limited basis. If I move to FL, then we will work something out, likely split the cost of a new housing, and then we each will own one. I'd think we will split service costs if that becomes necessary in the future.

I think it's a great idea! I have a d80 and I want a housing, however, $1400 just isn't gonna work for me either, however, if I could spen $700 it would be tempting! Good idea.
