horizontally...

Thanks for the link spectre. The video was kind of hard to see, if you have any more advise I sure welcome it. I'm not sure how you start your ascent or how you control your rate of ascent. Is it all controlled by your inflator valve? Do you always stay horizontal? Or, do ascend vertically to? What procedure do you follow?

First, be sure to practice near an ascent line so you can grab it if you have problems.

You understand the concept of breathing off the top of your lungs to rise, and the bottom of your lungs to sink, correct? [Remember, breathing... not holding your breath!].

So that's all you really do. Breathe off the top of your lungs, and work your way to the middle. You'll get to a point where you breathe off the bottom of your lungs to stay in one place.

At this point you vent a little air from your wing. If you note the video, the guy on the left bends at the hips and vents from his dump valve. The guy on the right bends up to vent from his inflator hose.

Now you should be back at a point where you are neutral.

Do it again.

Your best bet would be to use breath control to ascend 5 ft or so. Then dump enough air to become neutral again. Hang there for a bit to be sure your neutral. Repeat.

Eventually you'll get the hang of it and you'll be able to do it smoothly without the 'stops'. Definately use the stops to control yourself until you get the hang of it.

So... breath control ascent... dump to neutral, ascend, neutral...

remember the closer you get to the surface, the more dramatic the expansion of air in your wing, and the smaller the distance you can travel while staying in control.

Never thought of it in that way -- would you explain?
