Good point detroit diver:

If your using the rig as an emergency gas supply system then you would abort the dive as soon as you were required to switch to it.

If using the system for shallow work then you would ascend if increased breathing resistance was felt.

(when the air supply pressure begins to get low you will have in increase in breathing resistance, at these shallow depths this is a signal that you only have 15 to 25 breaths left... Plenty of time to do a controlled ascent)

Isn't that indicator dependant on the type of reg that you're using?
 
It’s a broad generalization, not a quantifiable indicator. The main point was that while using the hookah rig (shallow water operations) usually doing some type of work as your mobility is restricted by the length of the hose (golf ball recovery, ships cleaning, ships husbandry) if you are able to use all the available air supply the effect of running low will not be immediate and necessitate an emergency ascent.
