My bet is that it's a virus. When farmers started transferring live shrimp (aquatic insects basically) around the world it had devastating effects on indiginous populations which had never been exposed to selected lethal viruses, which at the time were not detected or known to exist. Since then it's been found that there are many sublethal ones also which slow growth, cause mortality when the animal is stressed etc etc. Perhaps the African bees were carriers and as they moved up the Americas, spread some "bug". But there is hope. Geneticists have found shrimp families that are resistant and breed them with high survival rates.

Colony Collapse Disorder is a terrible problem. Google it and find out more. It's reported that if the bees dissappear, we will have about 4 years left on the planet. Think of all the worlk that is done by the bees. Humans couldn't possibly pollinate all the flowers of the fruits and vegetables that we need to feed us. It is a very important issue and it really isn't getting much press.

Here's another take on the situation. It is also a YouTube video. It is distressing to watch. Please be extra cautious when you use pesticides around your home from now on.
