After seeing the extreme poverty on the mainland and on Roatan, my wife and I began searching for charities that focus on Honduras. I came across this site: http://www.roatanchildrenshome.com/whoweare.htm

From there web site:

We are a group of Scuba Divers who call CoCo View Dive Resort,
Dockside Dive Center and Playa Miguel our second homes.

We are dedicated to helping the children of the community we love so much.

Is anyone familiar with this group or can anyone suggest another legitimate charity that focuses on Honduras?

Thanks
Roger

Hey, Roger, that's an awful nice thing you're doing. Here's a link... I hope it helps.

Not sure of the link you posted (I did not follow it thru), but goto the Cocoview Resort Home page www.cocoviewresort.com; goto the bottom of the page and you'll find the link you want that is recognized by Cocoview. - Chris

I have volunteered and support La Clinica Esperanza on Roatan located in Sandy Bay. It's a clinic providing medical help for low or no cost. Due to the effort of Peggy Stranges, an American nurse who now lives there, the new clinic is operating out of the new building. She has also been instrumental in getting another hospital built on that end of the island. There's much more to do to get the hospital completed.

I'm headed there this w/e with more supplies and a cash donation provided with the help of my dive buddies.

Here's the link to several needs on Roatan. Click on Peggy's picture. There are many ways to help. Contributions are tax deductable.

Thanks for the information. It is very helpful. We hired a driver to show us Roatan and he raved about the La Clinica Esperanza and Peggy.

Bratface - check your PMs

Roger,

Thank you for bringing up such a wonderful thread. The Bay Islands could use all the help we can give, beyond just our tourist dollars.

Here is a charity that we supported when purchasing our gear through Scubatoys:

Toys for the Children (TftC) was founded in 1997 and is committed to providing toys, school supplies, household goods, and personal items to the children and families in the Honduras, Costa Rica, Mexico, and elsewhere. We have delivered gifts to over 11,000 children since 1997.

Toys for the Children

You can donate directly through Scubatoys, our preferred dive shop and a sponsor of ScubaBoard. Their website is Scubatoys and you can directly donate by going to this link.

We're planning (tentatively) a Christmas trip to Roatan. If it pans out that we go, we'll be bringing gifts for the kids as well as all of our friends at Coconut Tree.

rleslie, thanks for the PM, and I will share it here with others.

There are other ways to help besides cash contributions. If you have some items on the list (see the needs at www.missionroatan.org - click Peggy's picture), they can be sent to the warehouse and be shipped to Peggy on a somewhat regular schedule.

Medical supplies, equipment, etc. Anything that you can think of that a hospital may need (sheets, beds, scrub tops/pants for the staff) will probably be needed. Anything that you can think of concerning building a house (painting, wiring, plumbing) will probably be needed at some time or another. Volunteer doctors, nurses, dentists, etc. can be helpful as well. I'll talk to Peggy this w/e and post a thread when I get back.

If anybody has any questions or would like to see some of my photos of the clinic PM me.

Bratface,

Find out if they need any IT gear (computers, laptops, wireless, etc). I don't have any medical training or knowledge, but I'd be glad to bring down some good gear to help them out. I'd also be glad to volunteer on a future trip, although I lack medical skills I have a great deal of technical knowledge and can lift heavy objects! (I've got to be good for something)

My wife is on the board of directors for the childrens home. Those kids are a joy to be around. They do so much with so little it is amazing. The great part about any donations given to the fund is that 100% of the money goes straight to the kids and their needs. The expenses to run things and the time needed are all donated, not a single penny goes to run the site or anyone running it.

Later, Hawk.
