While searching out a place to find dive training here in Dorset UK, I found these folks in Portland - very local and easily accessible to me.

They state a Hogarthian approach to diving.

What is this exactly and is it something I should be going for or avoiding if seeking my first training?

Hogarthian is based on minimalization. In other words, take only what you need with you when you dive and then take 2 just in case you need a backup.

As for whether you should go into it as a new diver, all I can say is YES. I have been using a Hogarthian setup since I got my first kit.

you dont sign a contract in blood. If you dont like it....change.

Cave diving system - unless you are going to cave dive, disregard.

IMO that is a misrepresentation. It is a very solid approach if you are doing any type of advanced, higher risk diving such as caves, deep wrecks with penetration, deep deco diving. It is not just for cavers. I'd suggest you give it a close look. I know I am! I plan on working up towards deep wreck diving, and I might as well learn one philosophy from the beginning.

The author of the linked article is an experienced wreck diver and has no need for Hogartian or DIR systems, as they are for cave diving. The point being that Hog and DIR are not systems for all diving.

Having fun children?

I only asked what it was all about - so thanks to the first four posters for their responses and links to information.

Now - seeing as this is my first proper post after my introducing myself one yesterday, where I explained I dont dive at all yet and so havent the foggiest idea what you are all screaming at each other about, maybe you could explain to me in plain English -

Why taking only the equipment you require for your diving and keeping things simple as appears to be the Hogarthian approach, is either a good or a bad thing.

In reasoned terms would be good !

it's good if you've tried to think about your diving to a point you know what you're likely to need & what's fluff. you can also use ideas that make sense for you and not use those that don't.

it's not good if you're a shop trying to sell fluff.

it's good if you're trying to be as streamlined as possible.

it's not good if you've bought all this stuff that is now superfluous. (i know the pain of this one!)

read up & see what you think yourself. it may be for you, or it may not. cheers!

ps - hogarthian and dir are cousins, not twins.
