Just get it under control. I've got it too (with the dreaded cholestorol) and my Dr signed my scuba med waiver no problem, as long as things are under control. I've been honest on all forms with no problem (so far).

Hang in there bud. Hypertension is something most people are dealing with. One way to help get it under control is start with a better lifestyle. Make sure when you lose weight, eat better ( low sodium diet ), and become more active then you may need less assistance from medications. If you are on them for good just make sure you understand what these medications do. Discuse things with DAN/Dive Physician before you get nervous about your diving future. Many people are diving with hypertension.

thank you for the heads up. I've got a lot of replies which makes me feel better.

the reason that hypertension is a contraindication to diving is that when a healthy person jumps in water the blood pressure elevates naturally as a response to lack of gravity.

In someone that has already elevated blood pressure, there is the potential for this additional elevation of pressure to exceed safe levels and could result in lowered levels of consiousness. While this is not life threatening on land, generally in the water, unconciousness leads to drowning and death..

Just thought you would like to know..

My Dr. is on the formulary panel for his HMO. While very conservative in prescribing medication, he still opines that eventually all of us older fellows will eventually be taking asprin, a bp med and a cholesterol med.

Read the stuff on medication on the DAN site, discuss with your doctor, know what the medications really do.

I started diving at 60 and will get my 100th dive at Coz this month. Lisinopril, Hydrocholorothiazide (drink lots of water and little coffee before diving), and Lovostatin all tolerated with no problem.

Dive on!
