Located somewhere between gainesville and palatka in some wooded area behind a trailer (mobile home). Apparently it's existence is local common knowledge (deemed the "Devils' Hole" not to be confused with the "devil's Millhopper") and is a nice summertime swimming spot for all the country guys and gals. I only know where it's located by memory, but I can't even remember the highway it is off of.
Anyway, back in my UF days we went swimming there once, and came across a diver surfacing right beside us. Freaky for a moment, but came to realize that it is a popular cave system, as well as a popular insurance scam car dropoff point. These guys were recovering a jeep that had been dumped there several days prior. Among the vehicular bones that lied on the bottom was a 50-something cadillac. They said that the cave system there tied up with the local spring fed lakes across the highway, and that it is a dangerous system since the water flow is high.
Does anyone else know of this place, and have you any personal experiences with it? It's a clear water sinkhole, about 60 yards diameter on the top, about 20 yards diameter at water level, limestone walls about 5 ft high in places, very overgrown-been there for probably hundreds of years at least, about 50 ft from surface of land to water level, has live oaks on the gradient, one with a big swing rope and a couple of makeshift jumping platforms.
I've always wondered about what it looked like on the bottom...
