I'm a little nervous bc I've never posted on any internet forum of any sort before ... but here goes! I'm here because my husband is a diver (open-water certified in Akumal) and we're planning our first trip to Isla Mujeres at Easter. I'm looking for good information on dive spots and dive operators there, to help inspire him for this trip and to counteract the doldrums brought on by three straight weeks of cold, rainy weather in Northern California. Anyway, my name is laurieV, and although I hyperventilate at the very thought of breathing oxygen from a tank, I love the sea like all the rest of you and am a lifelong snorkeler. I look forward to being part of your community!

Hi Lauriev.

Welcome to Scubaboard. You'll find tons of info here.

Are you planning on becoming a diver? If so, keep in mind that you start off in a swimming pool. My pool was so shallow that we had to kneel to get our heads under water. It's not scary when you start out in 3 feet of water.
Now, others may think this is terrible advise but this is how I got started & it worked for me.
I was a snorkeler for years. I wasn't afraid, more like unsure. My boyfriend had me try snuba on a vacation, to see how I'd do. I loved it. So the next step was to sign up for a class & get certified.
In case you didn't know: Snuba is kinda like a combination of snorkeling & diving. You go about 25ft. under water. The tank floats on the surface of the water & the air comes to you in a long tube. It sounds silly, but it was a great stepping stone for me.
