Welcome to the Board, You're joining quite a history of Oklahoma divers. . . With the Hurrican/Tropical depression forcast to hit us in the next couple of days, our local diving may slow waaaayyy down. Without this storm, a normal year would have divers at several lakes around Oklahoma taking advantage of the best visibility of the year. Tenkiller and Broken Bow lakes are in the path of forcasts of 10 to 20 inches of rain. . . if that happens diving will be poor till winter. Beaver lake in Arkansas and several other popular diving lakes will also be threatened. Ocean divers think they're the only Hurricane victims.
If Lake Murray and lake Elmer Thomas remain west of the storm path. . . they will be the area lakes to go to. Lake Murray is in south central Oklahoma and Elmer Thomas Lake is in south west part of the state, in the National wildlife refuge, below Mt Scott. Texas divers always bragged about their 30 lb buffalo fish. . . never took Lawton divers up on the offer to spear a 2000 lb buffalo, and they were never sure if we were serious. . . Ah, the fun of leaving texans wondering.

I'm now in Oklahoma City, but have been all over Oklahoma. Weather forcasters here seem to have missed the forcast. Instead of 10 to 20 inches or rain, it may be less than an inch in the Tenkiller watershed. . . Online, go to corps of Engineers website then check the lake you are interested in. Somewhere buried in the pages will be a measurment of rainfall in its drainage area for the last 12 hours, and the last 24 hours. Currently for Tenkiller that is .50 to .75 for the Tenkiller drainage. . . There's more rain falling in Arkansas so conditions at Beaver may be worse.
Check out dives can be through another dive shop (referral), if arrangements are made with your dive instructor. Lake conditions are better this time of year, with the water about the same temperature as they were in early July. A 3 mil thickness suit will be comfortable, usually till the first of October. Weather permitting, you can still do your check outs and a few more dives before cold weather.
