I have dived down to the hull of the repulse but no further (so far), and i know some of the people who have made penetrations here. To the best of my knowledge no artifacts have been taken from the site and one diver who did bring something up promptly had the artifact tossed back by the operator to discourage people from further instances.

The Repulse is several miles offshore in a fairly exposed location, and to 'police' the wreck would be near impossible, this is SE asia not europe not USA. I was on a trip that was not far from the repulse when we were basically highjacked and held ransom by the indonesian navy. In fact thats how i ended up at the repulse as we were made to clear out of indo waters so headed back into malay waters.

If a total ban were to be put on this wreck then it would effectively drive it underground. There are plenty of people who want to dive it and operators prepared to take divers there on full charters, trust me with a total ban these trips would be still be going on. At the moment Repulse trips are out in the open being advertised on operator websites, and keeping it this way is IMHO the best route.

As a Brit Citizen i am proud to have been able to see the resting place of HMS Repulse, and see no difference in diving here or one of the many Japanese wrecks in the region.

Benvenuto a bordo from the middle of Mediterranean sea. :azvatar:

Thanks for all the kind welcomes guys.

Never dived NI, but then only just started in the last couple fo years, used to live about as far a possible from the sea in the Uk which put a bit of dampener oin things. Have plans to go to Baltimore in south Ireland soon though along with Scapa and Norway all in the next 12-18 months.

Albion - thanks for your views on Repulse I feel that we should not have to Police it and that ideally people should respect that it has been designated an official war grave. I certainly wouldn't expect to rock up and dive the Royal Oak. There are plenty of other wrecks in the sea to avoid the ones with offical designation. To dive them (official war graves) is bad enough, to show footage of their remains to rave music is two fingers in the face of those who died on them and fought for your freedom.

Anyways still asking about the Mascara, suggestions?

I see nothing wrong with diving any wreck, be it a war grave or not. Let us not forget the thousands of lives lost on the beaches of Normandy, Nazi concentration camps, or nuclear detonation over Hiroshima. Today you can walk on its beaches, push your baby cart through the historical camps, and have lunch in downtown Hiroshima.

Being the publisher of Advanced Diver Magazine, I feel there is a politically correct method of diving and documenting history for both editorial and film production, even if you show human remains. Showing respect to the deceased is required, but to forget the true history is irrational.

These comments have nothing to do about the GUE video. I did not see it, thus I do not know if they respectfully and intelligently produced a good documentary about its history, current location, and condition, or if they just created a fly by the seat of their pants, half assed film about some guys diving a wreck with human remains?

P.S. Welcome aboard, dont be a stranger

Welcome to ScubaBoard!

I would agree with those that believe diving any of these wrecks is not a problem, but that the issue is one of respect for the memory of the men who died here.

I have not seen the video, so I can't comment specifically on that. From what you've said, it sounds like the editing of the footage is where the "rave music" came in. So it doesn't sound like a wreck diving problem, but more one of poor judgement when choosing the musical tracks for the addition of music during the post production. I don't imagine that the GUE team was blairing the music through underwater speakers during their dive. The choice of music would certainly have an impact on how the footage was presented when telling the story.

Just my 2 psi.
