Hi everybody!

This is my first post, so be gentle with me!

I started diving a few months ago, and wish I had done it many years ago, as I am 51 now and have missed a massive opportunity.
Never mind, I'm still very fit so hopefully I have many years of discovering great things underwater ahead of me.

I'm from Liverpool in England, but am presently living and working in Dubai in the U.A.E.

I have just (yesterday) completed my PADI Advanced Open Water Course, and did two dives at 25m deep to wrecks, which was really enjoyable.

Yesterday I saw my first box fish and my first two batfish.

I learn something new each time I dive, and I have found everyone I've met in the diving community to be extremely friendly and helpful.

Hope to hear from like monded people and maybe see some of you on my next dives!

thanks for reading

Geoff

Diveings great fun. I got out of it for 15 years and back into it hot and heavy. Welcome and be safe!

Congrats and Welcome....

Hello from Charleston South Carolina USA...

I don't think you have "missed" anything. I also think you will meet many other divers your age as time passes. Due to the costs you will find a significant number of older people involved in diving. (apparently because they can afford the travel and accommodations)

I started at 45. I am approaching 60 with no plans to quit. I find diving to be a great sport for active older people because it is great exercise and it is not difficult.

I know there are younger people with negative "opinions" about older people, but frankly I don't care. I enjoy diving and I go diving on a regular basis. About half of the time I meet people (while diving) that I enjoy their company for the day. You see, I have found diving mostly comprised of gypsies. We come, we dive, we leave. A few new friendships, last, most do not.

ps: In my opinion, diving is not near as difficult as many would have you believe. We have a lot of people in diving that are EXTREMELY focused on danger, injuries, death, and fear. Once you reach a certain level of training and experience it becomes a tremendous amount of fun and pleasure with no anxieties and no fear.

Enjoy!

I am 51 now and have missed a massive opportunity.

I actually used to work in Kuwait!
Long time ago, I was there between 85-86, but sadly I hadn't discovered diving then.

The company I presently work for are pricing work there, so you never know I could be sent there and if so I'll check them out - thanks!

I personally don't have any issue with age, so I understand your comments entirely, and thanks!

I see your point about age and affordability, and in the short time I have been diving I have met many 'mature' people!

Thanks for the encouragement - really appreciated.

hey you are never too old to start diving! you just have to catch up on the younger guys and maybe even pass them up,,,

i have been diving since i was about 10,, and love it,,,i am now 76 and going strong,,,have owned about 5 dive shops along the way,,have also seen many changes in the diving field,,,

also a old instructor got my ticket after i retired from the Navy back in 1970,,,so i have seen many changes,,,

My first post too! Ceveral things caught my eye. I'm moving to Dubai (from Wisconsin, US) in the next several months. Just waiting for the work visa to come through. Been researching diving in the area. I'd love to chat about who you're diving with... I'm in my 50's also. I just don't let that keep me from doing the things I love.

Capt Bill!!! A friend of mine and I are considering getting out of the rat-race in a few years and have thought about a move to Costa Rica to opening a place. Love to pick your brain too!
