My husband and I got hooked on scuba diving during a Caribbean vacation this past December. The funny thing is that I had no interest in diving because (don't laugh) I am scared of fish--size doesn't matter. Somehow I found myself on the dive boat with a mask on my face and fins on my feet (and all other necessary equipment in between). I loved it!! But still scared of fish. Anyway, I got my OW certification at Crystal River, FL a few weeks ago and I am all fired up to go on our next scuba trip and get more diving experience. It's great to be here. I'm looking forward to getting to know you.

Welcome to the board and the wonderfull world of diving. Have fun on your next trip and be sure to tell us all about it.

hi welcome to the board!

that is great that you are diving even though you are scared of fish (being brave
means DOING something despite your fear, right?)

also, it's my experience that once you get used to them, the fear will slowly diminish.

keep at it!!

(the first time my wife and i were close to tarpon, we did a very good immitation
of a pair of ballistic missiles being launched from a submarine into the dock)

And welcome to SB. :wavey: Put us in your Favorites and check in often.

By the way, the fish are afraid of you, too. Try to chase one down next time; I'll bet that your fear will disappear. Any time the old phobia returns, try to catch one. Except, don't try this with the 'Cuda; they're pretty weird.

Congratulations on trying it, in spite of the fish! I think Don's advice is good. Maybe not actually try to catch them.... even puffer fish can get wierd if they are cornered. But it's interesting to see how the fish can effortlessly seem to stay just out of arm's reach.

I was afraid of barracuda, until I read that they are programmed not to attack something as large as a human. Then I gingerly followed a big one that had been shadowing me, and he retreated very nicely.

Also you might try getting some fish ID books and start identifying what you see on your dives.

All the best!

Welcome to the board from sunny Gozo, Malta. We get alot of beginners at our school who have the same phobias. But a little patience and its amazing the change! Two of them work for me as Instructors now! Take care and enjoy diving! Mark.
