Yes you can change LCD settings to ON all the time (touch display-sleep-never
I just upgraded from Hero 2 to Hero 4 Silver
Echo the settings: 1080p, 30fps.
Quickcapture on to make it easy to start the darn thing with my 5mm gloves on.

My maiden dive with it last weekend got some good footage but the darn LCD display kept turning off after a minute or two. Is there a setting to make it stay on?

It really depends on the conditions. I use ProTune without a thought and adjust accordingly. Make sure to grab a lens cover depending on your depth and light source.

Your best best is to play around with a few free dives and get the lighting right. Practice makes perfect though.

I shot this video in Belize with the 3+ https://www.dropbox.com/s/oisrxq9b4rukx5x/Belize_Go Pro_Hero 3_Black_May_2014.mp4?dl=0
I'd be using the GoPro as basically my B camera. Not even sure if I'll use it UW much since I have a main camera for dives but I do like the Hero 4's feature of 4k. My main UW camera is only 1080. But the GoPro is handy for any type of water sports where having a very compact waterproof camera is a must.
