Hi,

I recently had an inguinal hernia operation where they used Ultrapro mesh to cover the opening.

The question I I have is will the ultrapro mesh have a negative effect on decompression diving. The prolene mesh eventually becomes a part of the abdominal muscle, will this cause trouble in eliminating nitrogen from the tissues.

Thanks:confused:

Hi McCDiver,

There is the theoretical consideration that possible derangement of blood circulation in areas of scar tissue formation could impede off-gassing, but there is no solid evidence that such occurs. Most diving medicine experts of whom I am aware would not find a routine and uncomplicated inguinal hernia repair using mesh worrisome as regards inert gas elimination.

Far more important is that the diver be entirely healed and fit for SCUBA before returning to diving. The last thing one wants is re-injury. The treating physician should release the patient to full physical activity, including diving by name.

Helpful?
