It's supposed to be a father and son who are in the accident. As you stated the riddle, the surgeon could be the father.

The boy's dad or mom, of course.
From the tone of the riddle, it seems to be quite old because there seems to be the assumption that the surgeon is male.
The surgeon could be his father because as the riddle was put forth it did not exclude the possibility that the driver of the car was not the boy's father.

The Kraken:
The boy's dad, of course.
No one said that the occupants of the car were father and son.

There is nothing in the riddle to indicate the sex of the surgeon, so the surgeon could also be the boy's mom.

Bill.

The Kraken:
The boy's dad, of course.
No one said that the occupants of the car were father and son.

The dad left. Bigsage is right. It's his mom who can't operate.

Ah, Hank, it said, "... the man is fine, and is allowed to leave,", not the father is fine, and is allowed to leave,."

The Kraken:
Ah, Hank, it said, "... the man left", not "... the boy's father left."

I remember this joke from a few years ago. I believe it was supposed to have read "a man and his son were in a wreck". You're right though, there is no certainly if it's a "man and a boy" because it could be mother or father. The kicker was that no one thinks of a woman surgeon.

This is a question from the game "Mindtrap" and the correct answer is the surgeon is the boy's mother. Also the comment about the man and is son riding in the car is how the question should have read.
