Hi,
I've been looking into spearguns. They seem to have divided it into three categories; pnematic, polespear, sling style. Can anyone give me pros/cons on each of these styles? Also, since I plan to dive in New Jersey coast, are there any regulations related to spearguns that you can advise me on? I'd appreciate any help or suggestions you have. Thank you.

Yeah, your question is kind of like coming here and asking, "I want to start scuba diving. What kind of gear should I buy"? You'll get a lot of different answers and you also will on Spearboard. First you have to determine the type of fish you're targeting and visibility that you'll be hunting in. This will guage what length of gun you want. Longer for clear water and long shot capacity, shorter for manueverability in low vis since you only see the fish for an instant sometimes. As for regulations, contact your state fisheries office for NJ specific laws.
Me personally? I like band guns. Wooden. I use Riffe Comp3xs and a Baja. (it's a long one) And I free shaft in shallow clear water. I use a line for deeper free diving. I only free dive due to Belize law of no scuba spearing. I'm relatively new at this but some of the guys on Spearboard are pros. Hank

I am also just starting to spearfish and have bought a pole spear and a Ab Biller 48. Pole spear is for wrecks and the gun is for open water spearing. PM me and we`ll see if we could hook up. Pick up a few books on the subject, or you could borrow some the few I have read have been a real education.
