Starting to think about a scuba-focused trip for our 20th anniversary (late 2009). We live in Europe now, but will be back in the US (Boston) by that time. If we don't move back we will consider the Maldives or Mauritius......

Trip Requirements: Looking for combination of romantic and GREAT diving that a newbie can enjoy and that I won’t be bored with (she has done <10 discover dives and will get fully certified before we go). She will also want some creature comforts (spa/massage, etc……and not wanting to do any of our own cooking that might be required in a rented house/villa).

Total Budget: ~$10k

Have considered Fiji, Indonesia and other South Pacific destinations, but it is a long way to go from the east coast US....and we would only have 1 week-10 days. The vibe of Fiji (smaller, quality resorts which are isolated, quiet and make you feel like you have dropped out of civilization) are what we are looking for... but my wife especially is a little worried about traveling that far for a relatively short vacation.

We went to St. Vincent (Young Island) for our 15th and really enjoyed it. Diving was great (macro) and perfect for a newbie (she did 4 dives) and resort was romantic (we were in a stand alone unit high on the hill with its own private patio, outdoor shower, etc.). We’d like to try somewhere new, however. Privacy was great in St. Vincent…and no hassles from vendors trying to sell you stuff on the beach….

Some initial thoughts:
- South Pacific – still not off the list…..but if flying from the US east coast, is it really worth it for a week?
- St. Lucia - Anse Chastenet on St. Lucia always gets great reviews for romance, but I don't know much about the diving. My impression is that it is sort of average by Caribbean standards, but good for newbies. We also went to St. Lucia for our honeymoon (Club Med – pre-diving). I’ve seen comments on this board about Ti Kaye or Jade Mountain (related to AC….and even more $$$$$).
- Caymans - GC too developed. Little Cayman always intrigues me, but not sure how romantic the resorts are there.
- Turks & Caicos – diving obviously great, but with all the development, does it have the right “get away from it all” vibe? Maybe Salt Cay?
- ABC islands - more mass-market travel oriented...?
- Dominica - diving seems great for newbies, but resorts are pretty basic.
- Central America (Belize, Bay Islands or Costa Rica)......don't have much info and whether these locales would be good for a newer diver or what the accommodation options are.

Any ideas? Thanks.

Try Southern Cross Club on Little Cayman. It's not "luxurious" in the Ritz-Carlton or Four Seasons sense, but it's pretty upscale. Excellent food, massages available, killer wall diving and decent macro too. It's a different feel than Young Island and less formal.

If you're thinking Turks & Caicos, consider Grand Turk instead of Provo.

I would definitely check out a few places like Belize Outer Atolls and Roatan or Utila in the Caribbean. go to: Belize Resorts and Diving Packages for Divers.
Ambergris or Turneffe Atolls
or
Welcome to CoCo View Resort get a room over the water, very romantic!

If you decide to do the Pacific, Fiji has direct flights from LAX so travel is overnight and less painless than other destinations.
Wananavu Beach Resort Accommodation Fiji
very romantic and excellent diving.

:D

dive with Vernon through baywatchdivers@yahoo.com
There are areas that cost more, but you get more for your money. From europe, you should be able to get a flight into Cebu direct, the take the fast ferry to Tagbilaren http://www.oceanjet.net/ . You can off-gas at the chocolate hills, see the Tarsiers, and have lunch on the Loboc river.
In Cebu you can see were Magellan was killed in a battle with Chief Lapu-Lapu.
You can't go wrong diving in the Philippines.

All great ideas...thanks thus far!

Southern Cross Club looks cool...anyone who has stayed there have direct feedback?

So with a place like Wananavu in Fiji (which looks incredible)....how long would the trip be from LA?

Our LDS just went to Wananavu last year and they loved it. The flight I think leaves around midnight from LAX and arrives at Nadi 7am or so. So you sleep on the flight. I think they told me it was around 12 hour flight but I'm not sure.

If Fiji was a choice, I'd look at Matangi Island.
For the Caribbean, your previous mention of St. Lucia would be good.
A romantic place list with diving also should include Hawaii as I think a place like Maui, perhaps the Sheraton at Kaanapali...nice beach, great snorkel dive out in front, town is but a few minutes away (Lahaina) with plenty of top eateries. In fact for my anniversary this year we'll be at Kaanapali.

Hi Chris hope all is well and congratulations. Let's see for the Caribbean look at Bonaire and Harbor Village but if you really want to do it right there's only one real choice, French Polynesia. Ten days on Moorea should do it. Diving to die for and topside beauty that will steal your heart. Here's a trip report from 2000 when I was a newbie diver.

Tahiti Trip 1

Oh I forgot to mention Air Tahiti Nui has a direct flight from JFK.

Congratulations on twenty years, My wife and I will be hitting the twenty year mark in 2010. I'm familiar with Young Island Resort (15 and 18 year aniversaries) and if you're looking for something like that, but nicer, check out Peter Island Resort in BVI. It's run by the same company. Its a bigger island and is more private and exclusive. Also try booking these guys or other real nice properties on Luxurylink.com. You'll save some pretty big money and I've had very good service with them booking Young Island.

Of course, all the suggestions above sound great. I'll take one of each.
