Generally the softness gets worse as distance increase. Take your camera and put it on a table. Put a ruler under it. Now use step zoom and see how the lens front moves. The position with the lens further back is usually the worst and tends to be around 50mm. When you take test shots you need to use the same aperture and ISO and make sure you include a test card
