I'm a nother poor soul who has a non-diving spouse and we need to have a vacation which includes of course diving and other fun things for her to do, or I get a vacation! We have a week the first part of December and she wants some place cool or I would call it cold! While I like beachs and warmer temps.; here in Phoenix we almost alway are warm, so that is why she wants cooler temps. I'm a dry suit diver and haven't been really anywhere like Calf. or north of there to test my skills and I'm open to that. However, after many nights of two or more bottles of wine and hours on the net we have yet to book anything and our time is running out. Is there someone out there that can help? I was looking into Cat. Island in CA, but it appears there will be a problem with boat diving as it appears to be the slow season. HELP ME PLEASE, I need a diving vacation!

Catalina Island is a great place to get away. The boats go out when they get customers (winter season). However, diving the park is open all year. Your bride can also take day trips to the mainland (1 hour fiery express) to the many tourists destinations in SoCal.

One thing, I personally run out of things to do after two days in Avalon. I would suggest a vacation that included two days in Avalon, one travel day to San Diego, spend a week or so there. Diving is great, and a zillion things for the bride as well.

Catalina sounds perfect for you. There is shore diving or boat diving for you.
Also, check out diving up around Ventura - they go to the northern channel islands. Peace Dive Boat and California Dive Boats : The Official Page for info on boats in the area. You can get some mid-week day boat trips, Spectre goes out during week. Tell her its a trip to the Wine Country. :D We have done the Peace and Spectre a few times and both are good.

robint:D

What about Mexico? You could dive and get a quickie divorce on the same trip!

Just joking, of course. Consider Saba, where the diving is warm but the lodgings are up in the clouds where it's breezy and cooler. Good restaurants and a romantic, exotic destination.

Tobermory Canada??? Nice small town on Lake huron. IT will be cool enough for your wife.

You could look into staying in LA, not to warm in December unless the Santa Ana winds are blowing, and you do some boat dives to the Channel Islands while she goes to museums or shopping. It actually has a fair amount of culture if you look for it. ( Symphony, Opera, Museums, Galleries, Live Theatre, Architecture, Aquariums, zoo.) There is also decent skiing about 1 1/2 hours drive away in the San Bernadino Mountains. Our you could split the trip & do half diving & half skiing, if she likes that.

Catalina Island is a good place. You can stay on the island. It is not expensive and very close to where you live. close enough to drive (about 9 hours by car I think) I would fly then take taxi to ferry terminal.

You can dive right there in the dive park in Avalon or they have boats that leave and depart from Avalon. There are other things to do and norkleing is good too.

I live within sight of the island (on a clear day) it is only 21 miles off shore and 15 miles So. of my house. PM for detals.

One other good So. Cal isdea is San Diego. There are endless non-diving things to do there. Enough to fill up a week or two easy and the diving is very good. There is a lot of good beach diving and some very good low cost local boat trips to "wreck alley" and the kelp forests off Pt. Loma. You could even do both. San Diego and Avalon.
