READ THE ENTIRE MANUAL.

On a trip to the Keys I flooded my Aeris (bad battery change by me). Went to shop and bought a ZOOP knowing only that it would do what I needed (Nitrox and would not shut me out if I went over NDL). Read the entire manula that night. Next day an aggressive DM on a trust me dive put me into Deco on dive 2 on the Spiegel. (No I was not going to leave the DM while doing a swim through. I did as soon as I was in the clear. I was also not going to do a free ascent in a ripping top current. Swam immediately to the upline.) Even though I had no plan to go into deco I had read that part of the manual too. So I knew what the ZOOP was telling me and after playing flag for a while got on the boat with the computer cleared.

By the way if that ever happens to you do not hold onto the rope and exert energy that sucks air. I interlocked my hands and basically went totally relaxed and limp for the needed extra time.

A good example of knowing your equipment and how it works. I think it is especially important with new equipment (particularly important items such as computers) that you know what it looks like in all modes so that should the unthinkable happen, as it occasionally does, you are prepared and not misinterpreting the information given.

Chances are the DM computer and the Zoop were not using the same algorithms. The Zoop is more conservative than other brands. It is more noticeable on second dives. I always ask what my dive partner is using before I dive. I can always dive more conservatively if needed.

This DM did not check. After these two morning dives we drifted around having lunch out at the reef for an hour and then did a drift dive starting at 70 plus feet along the outer reef in a wall like area. I was soon drifting at 25 ft in 50-60 ft of water to keep within NDLs.

Have had the reverse. Was doing my deep cert in late Fall in NC in 60 ish water. DM had thrown on 3mm with no hood. I had a hooded semi-dry. He kept coming over and checking my Aeris to verify yes I had LOTS of dive time left and yes I am good on air and had plenty left. Finally he was looking so cold and miserable I thumbed the dive. Told me later it took him a day to get warm again.

Now I dive both the Aeris and the Zoop. Zoop is the primary but the Aeris serves as a backup and gives me useful information that is less conservative. Being 70 I am not opposed to being conservative.

My D4 (which uses a similar algorithm) will not display an NDL unless it is less than 99 minutes. I believe the Zoop does something similar. Although if you were at a depth of 50 feet, your NDL should have been less than 99 minutes.

This is correct. The Suuntos will show a "--" where the NDL time is if it is greater than 99 minutes. Often times, when I am diving nitrox, it stays like that at shallower depths unless I have been doing repetitive dives and/or I'm deeper. Nothing to worry about. However, if you are not already completely comfortable and understand what shows up where and what each of the symbols are on your dive watch, I suggest that you do some thorough reading and review of the manual and also check out some YouTube videos to familiarize yourself with it. It can be the difference between DCI and not if you didn't respond or act accordingly based on what is displayed on the face.

Happy diving!
