H2Andy:
i agree, Greg... i don't like to see sharks caught, but realistically speaking, the
sports fishermen are not the problem. commercial fishing (over fishing), loss of habitat, and climate change are the real threats.

I tend to agree.

Edit: Deleted reference to extinctions

Tell the shark hanging from his tail in the photo that the tournament does "minimal damage."

Your response would make sense if I said "minimal damage to individual sharks." If you read my links above, you will see that sharks as a whole benefit from the research done off of this tournament, and shark populations are not significantly damaged in the process. Your emotions are getting in the way of your point.

This thread was a much better discussion of the issues at hand imo:

http://www.scubaboard.com/showthread.php?t=144436

I'm not particularly keen anytime someone joins a forum with a post like this and no background as to where they come from on the issue.

My money on where she comes from on the issue is that she works for HSUS. Even used links with deceptive URLs which lead back to HSUS references that don't say much about HSUS.

OTOH, if anyone is going to say that the chief shark fisheries researcher from Woods Hole does not have the sharks' best interest in mind, I'd like to hear the logical argument behind that one...

You're a brand new member, and your only two posts have been to start and respond to this thread. Are you a member or employee of HSUS by chance? If so, I would say that would be a relevant piece of information to disclose...

Does anyone else find it relevent that "Andrea" hasn't commented?

As for the tournament I hope it is mostly catch and release. Humans are notoriously shortsighted regarding their impact on the planet. (that said I also think we are enormously stuck on our own importance but that is another story:D )

Alot of the tournaments here in the fabulous fl keys are catch and release

Very. Even more relevant are the number of folks who were willing to jump on her bandwagon without doing any research of their own.

Per the article I cited above, thousands of sharks caught in this tournament, only 50 brought in. The rest were measured, recorded, probably tagged (don't know that part for sure), and released. That constitutes a catch and release in my book. Plus the ones that are kept are studied in great detail for data on shark conservation, and all parts of the animal are used, mainly for distribution to charities for feeding the less fortunate.

I guess you're all correct...

I've got to log off now, gotta write my congressman and support Japan's research whaling now..... Kinda like research shark tournaments....

So let me get this straight. You don't believe the sport fishermen in the tournament...fine. You don't believe ESPN....I don't blame you for that. You don't believe me or anyone else who tells you of the history of this tournament....ok. But now you think the chief shark fisheries biologist from Woods Hole is in on a conspiracy to see to it that sharks go extinct? Umm....dude, let me get you a paper bag to breathe into, man.

I am taking this thread on from three angles. You tell me how poorly founded those angles are. 1) HSUS is well known to be an eco-whacko organization who masquerades around as a humane society. Don't use my resources. Research that one for yourself. 2) This thread was started by a user with a total post count of 2, both citing resources from HSUS, and likely works for the organization. When accused of as much, she not only failed to give any defense, she has failed to post ANYTHING since. 3) The foremost shark fisheries researcher from Woods Hole Oceanographic institute presides over this very tournament, and says in so many words that study of the 50 sharks killed in this tournament, and more importantly data collected from the THOUSANDS of sharks caught and released in the same tournament, is invaluable for shark conservation research efforts on the east coast.

I know it is easy to get caught up in the emotion of seeing a picture of a shark hanging like that. That is what the HSUS was hoping your reaction would be. If you want to fall into their trap, be my guest. If you are willing to think a little deeper about this issue, do a little research before making comments like above.

Gangrel, Some people just don't need to be confused with facts...
