Hi,

Im completly lost when it comes to the strobe I would like to get. I have a G9 with the Ikelite housing.

Im not sure how to chose the proper strobe. I could get 2 DS-51 for the price of 1 DS-160. BUT the 51 does not support TTL - so I paid more for the camera/housing to skimp on the strobe? not likely.

And then comes batteries - The Ikelite uses proprietary batteries right?

What about other brands? Im just so lost. Im looking middle to upper range for the strobe that I can bring into a bigger/better camera if I decide to go that route.

Go to Backscatter.com. Look at the INON 2000s deal.

I have a DS-51 and it uses 4 AA batteries.

Go with the INON!

the ds51's do ttl with the ike housing and a g9. they also use aa batterys.

Hi!

I have the Canon G9, Ikelite housing and a single DS-51 strobe. I couldn't be happier! The strobe is nice and light, easy to use (get ball and socket type arms).

It DOES indeed do TTL - not sure where you heard it doesn't. What it doesn't support is full Manual control - so I just either use Tv or Av setting on the camera depending on what I'm shooting and how I want it to come out. I'm far from an expert, though.

The DS-51 strobe uses 4AA batteries and is quite affordable too. I use rechargeable Maha Powerex 2700 batteries and they easily last for two dives without changing out.

I have a G9 in an Ikelite housing with the Ikelite DS125 Substrobe. It has a rechargeable battery which can power up to 250 full flashes. This strobe supports TTL and it also has a modeling light which is great for night dives. I am not sure of the price compared to the DS 51 strobe. I figure that when I change my camera, I will probably keep the same strobe as it is quite powerful. For this reason, I didnt really look at the price. I tend to change the camera more often than the strobe.

I have a G9 with Inon Z240 who are connect with optical fibre, the resultat is very good.
I have bought recently a SB105 connect in slave,i not try it yet

the thing to know about G9 ,you haven't TTL in manual mode

I went with the DS-51 because of price and size.

The DS-125 is much larger, heavier and bulky, whereas the DS-51 can make the setup more compact and manageable.

Since I shoot in the Pacific NW where visibility is limited, most of the shots are close range to macro - so I don't need a super powerful strobe in most cases. The DS -51 fit that bill nicely.

However, if you were planning on shooting subjects further away on a regular basis, didn't mind the bulk and weight, and had the $$$, going with the larger strobe would make sense.

BTW, I thought that the longer recycle time for the DS-51 would be a problem, but not once have I been hindered by it. I think it's a couple seconds vs. 1 sec recycle time on the DS-160.

Prices on the two were: $400 for the DS-51, and $840 for the DS-160 (the DS-125 is no longer available).
