I just don't log dives
I've been away from diving for quite a while. Had house catastrophe and lost all certification papers and card. Would NAUI main office still have records from 1981 or should I just get re-certified? Hmmm. Glad to be part of ScubaBoard.

You're going to need a refresher course anyway after so long, so unless you had any speciality/advanced certificates you may just as well get recertified.

Welcome to Scubaboard.

Howdy!

Welcome to SB!!
:happywave Put us in your computer's favorites and check in often. This is a great place to learn, compare, argue :argue: Look around our various forums - everything from New-To-Scuba to Instructors-Only to Dive Medicine.

So much has changed in 20+ years, and skills get rusty. I'd suggest getting into a basic course - faster and simpler.

BTW - Did you set up your Profile? Some ideas for your Profle might be taken from looking at mine. Click on my Username to the upper left, then click on my Profile, and see what I've done. For your's, click the [CP] in the upper left of the screen, then click [Edit Profile]. If you need any help, PM me direct.

Heya and welcome to the Board, I would agree as well, just take your OW again. It will be some much easier

Welcome Aboard!!!

It's addictive, but who cares?!?!?

Good friends and good info. What could be better???

P.S. - If you have not already done so, please fill out your profile.

I also agree about retaking the course. It can't hurt.

Welcome to ScubaBoard!

You could probably contact NAUI and have them send you another card to replace your original. I could see doing this for nostalgia with the original date and instructor's name on it.

However, if you do that, I would suggest that you at least take a refresher and maybe even an Advanced Open Water class. It is my understanding that the level of today's Advanced Open Water class might be a bit closer to the level of your Basic Open Water class in 1981.

Let us know what you decide and how it works out.

Dive safe!

At first I thought that I might be OK with getting a new card. I thought I remembered pretty much all that I learned, but after surfing the scuba board, and your advice, that it wouldn't hurt a bit to go ahead and start over. Technology has changed over the last 20 years. It was a good class that I went through. Don't remember exactly how many hours for each stage, but I do remember I had a Navy diving buddy that was Air Crew. He was taller and a little stronger swimmer. I never will forget the last dive I went with him. I had the depth gauge and the watch. He swam away from me at about 100 ft. We had been browsing the bottom at that point and I knew we had to go back up. I caught up with him at 140 ft. Thankfully he followed. Ran out of air around 60 ft. Put hand up, kicked once and blew air all the way through the slow acent. Didn't bother me then, but I'm older and wiser now. Can't leave a buddy, but I can pick'em better. Felt fine afterwards. Was I lucky?

Sounds like a bit of luck. Glad you made it up without incident.

I'll chime in on taking a refresher, though I'd probably get copies of my old cards, just for nostalgia's sake.

Welcome to the board,
Grier
