Hello Paul & Leila... welcome to Scubaboard! I'm fairly new to the sport as well, finding this web site and interacting with the members has been extremely helpful.
I live in southern California too, which as you know is a broad expanse of real estate. If you are near or in Orange County... I'm a member of the South Orange County Dive Club. There are club dives every Saturday, regularly scheduled night dives, and other events. If you ever want to dive and don't have a buddy available you should consider participating.
