Anyone have experience with phone cards in Coz? Someone needs to call in "stateside" daily and were wondering if anyone has recent experience with calling cards. Or any other advice for calling the home front. ... I know, why? Why not enjoy uninterrupted time in paradise? ... something about keeping the practice going to afford more dive trips...

rent a GSM phone preloaded with air time.

We've never had much luck with the phone cards. They either have steep upfront charges just to connect, or they rate goes sky-high despite what is printed on the card. There may be a trick, but we've never figured it out yet. Have used an Internet shop on Ave 5 sur between 3rd and 5th. Somewhere across the street from the French Quarter anyway. I think the name is Crew connection or cruise connnection. The rates are good, and the folks nice. It was convenient for us as we were styaing right down the street.

Nextel's radios work in Cozumel now. I had a buddy that went down a few weeks back. He called me from the customs checkpoint line (A BIG NO NO!! BTW) the hotel, the pier, the boat......pretty much everywhere except underwater. It worked great and it only cost him around $3 in additional radio charges on his regular bill.

I actually did LOL when I read that. "Hi, Baby, I just wanted to call and tell you that I am here on Cozumel waiting in the customs line and... yes?... what?... I'm going to have to call you back; there are some gentlemen here with automatic weapons that want to speak to me."

I usually use the phones at the Calling Station when I need to phone home. It works well and it's cheap. DO NOT call the US through your hotel switchboard unless you have money to burn.

Many businesses here have vonage lines. I know that Rock and Java, on the waterfront, who also makes a mean breakfast, offers customers use of their vonage line for $5 and internet for another similar token charge. My advice would be a cowboy breakfast daily!! yum!

Funny! The conversation went kinda like

" Hey! guess where I'm at....(where).. I'm in Cozumel!! HAHAHAH.. (you Jackass!).. Yip I'm fixing to go through the light at customs...(cool) ..."whispers" I gotta go...this guy with the gun is freakin out!"

He called me on the way to the hotel and told me that "apparently" you're not supposed to use the phone while you're waiting to clear customs.:D

Yeah, on our previous visits we've never been successful with any advertised phone cards. Thought perhaps we just weren't finding the right one (or two).

When I am on the road I use skype on my cell phone. Verizon evdo network works great with it even on their 1x network I have no issues with skype and it costs me nothing since I have unlimited data on my cell phone. I use the treo 700w but did the same thing on other smart phones before.

Simplest for us was to use the calling stations. It's fairly cheap and much simpler than trying to figure out cell access or collect calling (which, btw, wasn't all that expensive).
